What Is a PV Valve?

A PV valve, or Pressure Vacuum Valve (also called a pressure vacuum breather valve or tank vent valve), is a safety and conservation device fitted to the vent line of a fuel storage tank — underground or above-ground. It controls the pressure and vacuum inside the tank as fuel is added, withdrawn, or as temperature changes cause the vapor inside to expand and contract.

Rather than leaving the tank permanently open to atmosphere (which lets vapor escape continuously) or fully sealed (which risks dangerous pressure buildup), a PV valve stays closed under normal conditions and only opens at a predetermined pressure or vacuum setting — releasing or admitting air only when necessary.

How a PV Valve Works

Inside the valve, two separate sealing mechanisms handle two different conditions:

  • Pressure relief — When vapor pressure inside the tank rises above the set threshold (for example, as fuel warms during the day or as fuel is pumped in), the pressure-side disc lifts and vents excess vapor to the open vent system, relieving pressure before it becomes hazardous.
  • Vacuum relief — When pressure inside the tank drops below the set threshold (for example, as fuel is withdrawn or as it cools overnight), the vacuum-side disc opens to let air in, preventing the tank from collapsing or being damaged by negative pressure.

Both discs remain fully closed during normal operating conditions, which is what makes the valve effective at minimizing evaporation loss — vapor only escapes when the tank genuinely needs to vent.

What to Check Before Buying a PV Valve

Not all PV valves offer the same level of protection or compliance. Before purchasing, verify:

  • Certification. Look for PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) and ATEX approval, which confirm the valve meets recognized safety standards for use in explosive atmospheres.
  • Oil company approval. Check whether the valve is on the authorized materials list of major oil marketing companies such as BPCL, IOCL, or HPCL — this is a strong indicator of field-proven reliability.
  • Size compatibility. PV valves are typically available in standard sizes such as 40mm and 50mm — confirm the size matches your tank's vent line specification.
  • Set-pressure accuracy. The valve should open and reseat at consistent, accurately calibrated pressure and vacuum thresholds — inconsistent thresholds either waste fuel through unnecessary venting or fail to protect the tank.
  • Build quality and material. Since the valve is exposed to fuel vapor and outdoor conditions continuously, corrosion-resistant construction matters for long-term reliability.
